Erie County Clerk of Courts Records

The Erie County Clerk of Courts keeps records for the Common Pleas Court and the 6th District Court of Appeals. Craig A. Hecht serves as Clerk. The office handles filing, docketing, indexing, and preserving all court pleadings for civil, felony criminal, domestic relations, and miscellaneous cases. The Clerk also processes appeal cases from all lower courts in Erie County. The Legal Office is in the Erie County Courthouse at 323 Columbus Avenue, First Floor, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Beyond court records, the Clerk is also in charge of motor vehicle and watercraft titles. The Title Office has expanded hours that include Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Weekday hours for titles run 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Clerk issues all forms for service, including summons, warrants to arrest, orders of sale, and notices to serve. The Legal Office also handles billing and collection of court costs, restitution payments, and fines.

The office cannot look up records from other counties or states. You need to contact each county separately for their records.

Erie County has a free online search system for court public records. The Erie County Public Case Information System lets you search by party name, case type, case status, party type, date of birth or death, and file date. The system covers Common Pleas Court cases including civil, criminal, and domestic relations matters. This is a good starting point for anyone who needs to find case filings without visiting the courthouse.

The Erie County Municipal Court also runs its own online search platform. The Municipal Court is at 150 West Mason Road, Milan, OH 44846, phone 419-499-4689. Municipal courts handle civil filings under $15,000, small claims, misdemeanor criminal cases, and traffic cases. Local Civil Rules cost $15.00 by mail with a check and self-addressed stamped envelope. The Clerk's office is the place to go for liens. They file Judgment Liens and State Tax Liens. Federal Tax Liens and Mechanics Liens are kept at the Recorder's office instead.

Military discharge papers, known as DD214 forms, are recorded in the Recorder's Office, phone 419-627-7686. The Clerk does not have these. Foreclosure listings are not kept by the Clerk either. Erie County Vital Records

Birth and death records in Erie County are at the Erie County Community Health Center, 420 Superior Street, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. No appointment is needed for in-person requests. Phone orders go to (419) 626-5633 Ext. 5122. Certified copies cost $25 per copy. You can pay with cash, money order, credit card, or certified bank check. Print and fill out the Vital Application for Certified Copies before you visit to save time.

One thing to know about death certificates: social security numbers are not included for the first five years after death unless a spouse, executor, attorney, or funeral director asks for it. If you qualify, mark it on the application and bring proof of ID and a Proof of Relationship document. For birth and death records that happened before December 20, 1908, those are in Probate Court on the second floor of the courthouse at 323 Columbus Avenue, phone 419-627-7750. Records after that date are at the Health Department.

Marriage Records in Erie County

Marriage licenses and marriage records are at the Probate Division of the Erie County Court of Common Pleas. The Probate Court is on the second floor of the Erie County Courthouse at 323 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. To get a certified copy, fill out the Marriage Licenses Certified Copy Request Form. You need the names of both parties as they appear on the license, the approximate marriage date, your name and phone number, and the number of copies you want.

Cost is $2 per certified copy. Pay by cash or check. Include a self-addressed stamped business-size envelope with your request. Processing takes up to two weeks. This is one of the cheapest certified records you can get from any Erie County public records office.

How to Request Erie County Public Records

Ohio's public records law under R.C. 149.43 says you can ask for records in person, by phone, by email, or by mail. No form is required. You do not need to say who you are. You do not need to give a reason. Just describe the records you want clearly. The office must respond promptly. Copies are about $0.05 per page for standard paper.

If a request is denied, the office has to put the reason in writing and cite the law.
